Oh Du Kleines Kabinett
For cello (with Bach.Bogen), two violins, two violas and organ
I wanted to use some Handel in this piece. The reason for this being that Vigani was filling his cabinet with lovely little things from all over the world at roughly the same time that Handel was writing music. Furthermore, as Handel, like Vigani, came to England via Italy it seemed fitting to use his music. The innards of the cabinet are so beautiful that I could not resist making use of these too. So to the musical found material of Handel I added the visual found material of images of the objects inside Vigani's cabinet. I have of course no interest in making the piece sound like Handel or have rather spurious and elaborate schemes for incorporating the material, but am quite happy to have it stand for itself. So I left the Handel untouched by my pen, but not by my scissors. What then occurs is the literal underlaying of some Handel material in combination with the literal underlaying of the cabinets innards to my piece. The performers then choose what to bring to the forefront of the piece: very much like those children's books where one can pull monsters into and out of view.
