zuhanden is a series of images that engages with my very ‘visceral’ relationship to notation. In writing a score my musical ideas are transmitted through notation to the performer. To do this I will use my hands to draw/write notation onto paper. The notation becomes sound/music when a performer uses their hands (apart from the voice of course) to play their instrument. In zuhanden the focus is on the physical reality of the act of notating and its transmission onto paper by hand. It is part of a growing body of work that lifts notation off the score and puts it into new contexts.
