Untitled 40 [desk-life]

The final disc in the London Sinfonietta’s own label Jerwood series, featuring my piece Untitled 40 [desk-life], is now available to order from NMC Records.
The Jerwood Series

Lopsided

My main concern in this collection of original recorded material is with the beauty of the sound inherent in a more unusual approach to instrumental performance and I seek this beauty in those sounds that are conventionally avoided, the sounds that are often considered as interference. Additionally, dissolution of the familiar or narrative structure is employed to draw attention to the sounds in themselves.

The violin and accordion predominantly use 'noise'-sounds to remove them from their more familiarly associated soundworlds. This is mixed with more conventional sounds from the piano to create a tension between the familiar and the unfamiliar. The percussion is what I call 'desk percussion', the sounds are produced by the foil of a tablet pack, a pencil drawing circles on paper, a tumbler chinked, a strummed hair-band etc.

I recorded all the pieces at home with minimal technology embracing Lo-Fi. This was a decision made as part of the aesthetic idea of seeking beauty in the 'glitch'. If I was embracing the instrumental 'flaws' I also wanted to embrace the technical 'flaws' that Lo-Fi recording would throw up.

Morphica

I was asked to remix Untitled in cof minor (talking gibberish) by Mikhail. The CD also features remixes by DJ Spooky, Juice Ensemble, Telekaster and others plus art work by Uriel Orlow, Sonia Boyce and Paul Bloomfield. Samples of all the works can be heard at

The NMC Songbook

To mark its 20th Anniversary in 2009 NMC Recordings has commissioned The NMC Songbook. Nearly 100 composers, ranging from the country's most highly regarded figures to the younger generation of emerging talents, have each written a song, loosely themed on 'Britain' and scored for single voice or duet and a range of accompanying instruments. Claudia Molitor's my favourite sound is featured on this CD.
