Untitled [fizzy painting makes me happy]
Commissioned by Apartmenthouse for a concert at Wien Modern, November 2008.
Untitled [fizzy painting makes me happy], like much of my music, plays with familiarity and unfamiliarity of sound. Not only the actual sounds themselves, but also the way and the context in which they are presented. The unfamiliar can seem daunting without the familiar to lean against, and the familiar can seem stifling without the unfamiliar to liven things up. I'm also interested in the degrees of knowing and not knowing of what is about to occur. As many of us I too suffer the occasional bout of control freakery, but at the same time, like most, I like to be surprised. So the score itself moves between "exact", conventional notation to more graphic, indeterminate notation, from composer control to performer control. But of course the context in which the music is placed and the meaning it therefore acquires is in the control of the listener.
